Privacy Policy

The short version

• Lessons, reviews, grammar checks, the dictionary, role-plays and pronunciation scoring work on your phone, even offline.
• Noor’s optional AI brain also runs on your phone, so your chats are never sent anywhere.
• Nothing leaves your phone unless you use the speech recognition service or a SheraAI account. Both are explained below.
• For children, Smart AI chat and the speech service are off until a parent switches them on. AI chat is never available for ages 5-8.
• No ads, no analytics or tracking SDKs, and we never sell data.
• You can erase learners on this phone in Settings, and delete your account in the app under Account.

Learner profiles (a nickname, avatar, age group and level), progress, streaks, review schedules, mistakes and settings are stored only in the app’s storage on this phone. We ask for a nickname, never a full name. The Parent area can be locked with a PIN so children cannot change controls.

Noor can chat about anything once you download her AI brain (about 350 MB) in the app. The brain runs entirely on your phone: what you type to Noor is never sent to SheraAI or anyone else, and it works without internet.

• The download: the brain file comes from Hugging Face, the open model library where it is published. Like any download, that service sees your internet address. Nothing about you or your learning is sent.
• Who can use it: never ages 5-8; ages 9-12 only after a parent switches on Smart AI chat in the Parent area; ages 13+ by choice. You can remove the brain any time in Settings.
• Reports: if you tap Report on an AI reply, that reply and the reason are kept on the phone and, when a SheraAI account backup is set up, sent to SheraAI for 60 days so we can improve safety. Personal details are removed first.

AI can make mistakes. Grammar corrections in the tutor come from the app’s own checker, not from the AI.

The microphone is used only while you tap the mic to practise speaking. Sukhan does not record or keep audio. To turn speech into text, the app uses your phone’s speech recognition service:

• Speech service on: Android’s recogniser (usually Google) or your browser’s (Google or Microsoft) may send the audio to that company to recognise it, under their privacy policies. This is off by default for children.
• Speech service off: the app uses on-device recognition when the phone supports it (Android 12 and newer with the offline language pack). Otherwise speaking practice becomes listen-and-repeat without a score.
• Pronunciation scoring compares the recognised words with the sentence on your phone.
• Noor’s voice is pre-recorded inside the app or uses your phone’s text-to-speech voice.

Parents, teachers and adult learners can create an account to back up progress and use school features. We then store your email address and sign-in details, the learner nickname, age group, level, progress and consent choices, and for schools the school, class and teacher membership. Data is stored with Supabase over encrypted connections and protected by database rules, so a school sees only its own learners and a parent sees only their own children.

Sukhan is designed for children and families. We collect only a nickname for a child, show no ads, and keep every cloud feature off for children until a parent allows it. Schools that use Sukhan decide, together with parents, which features their learners use.

• On this phone: erase any learner, or everything, in Settings. Uninstalling the app also removes it.
• Your account: open Account → Delete account in the app or on the Sukhan website. This permanently deletes your account, your home learners and all their cloud progress. School profiles stay with the school, and any permission you gave for them is withdrawn.
• AI brain and speech: remove the AI brain in Settings, and switch features off in the Parent area, at any time.

The app is served from inside the APK and uses encrypted connections for every online feature. The AI brain file is checked against a fixed fingerprint before it is ever used, so a damaged or swapped file is rejected.
